The dialogue in corporate governance initiative aims to facilitate better understanding of pressure and opportunities that arise in increasingly international capital markets.

It encourages dialogue around business, investment accountancy and policy issues relating to corporate governance through publications, roundtables and face-to-face meetings.

Dialogue in corporate governance is convened by the ICAEW and its purpose is to:

  • challenge commonly held assumptions
  • identify fundamental questions
  • set challenges for future research

An overview of corporate governance

Both US and UK capital markets have widely dispersed share ownership in contrast to concentrated shareholdings predominant in Europe and many developing countries. Ownership patterns fundamentally influence the way in which policymakers approach corporate governance and the management of potential conflicts of interests between ownership and control – the ‘Principal / Agency’ problem.

Why is corporate governance important?

Corporate governance is a key element in enhancing investor confidence, promoting competitiveness, and ultimately improving economic growth. It is at the top of the international development agenda as emphasized by James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank:  ‘The governance of companies is more important for world economic growth than the government of countries.’

Question of the month: Have you explored participating in the improvement of your organization’s governance practices? – perhaps its time you did?

In closing, I welcome hearing about the critical issues facing your organization and some of your “lessons learned” in tackling them, please contact me at dswanson_2008@yahoo.ca.

Have another great month.
